Dog
The dog was the first domesticated animal and descends from wolves. On farms dogs work as herders and as livestock guardians that live with the flock, as well as being companions. Breeds vary enormously in size, energy and temperament.
Keeping
How it is kept
Kept for
- Guarding
- Companionship
- Lifespan
- 10–13 years
- Gestation
- 63 days
- Temperament
- Varies widely by breed; working breeds need a job
- Forage
- Need a complete dog food suited to their age and work, and fresh water. Grapes, raisins, onions and chocolate are dangerous to dogs.
- Housing
- Warm, dry sleeping quarters and a secure boundary. Livestock guardian dogs live with their flock but still need shelter.
- Good to know
- Working farm dogs need training, socialising and daily exercise. A dog that chases or worries livestock is a serious problem, so train and supervise dogs around stock. Keep vaccinations, parasite control and identification up to date.
