Giant-rhubarb

About

Gunnera tinctoria, known as giant-rhubarb, Chilean rhubarb, quirusilla or nalca, is a flowering plant species native to southern Chile and neighboring zones in Argentina and Bolivia. It is not closely related to rhubarb, as the two plants belong to different orders, but looks similar from a distance and has similar culinary uses. It is a large-leaved perennial plant that grows to more than 2 m (6.6 ft) tall. It has been introduced to many parts of the world as an ornamental plant. In some countries, such as New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, it has spread from gardens and is becoming an introduced species of concern. It is known under the synonyms Gunnera chilensis Lam. and Gunnera scabra Ruiz & Pav.

How to use it

Giant-rhubarb is often used as an ornamental plant due to its impressive size and striking appearance. It can also be utilized in landscaping to create lush, tropical-looking gardens. However, be cautious in areas where it has been introduced, as it can become invasive and disrupt local ecosystems.

In the kitchen

Giant-rhubarb is known for its culinary uses, similar to true rhubarb, but it is important to note that it is not closely related. While some parts of the plant may be used in cooking, caution is advised as not all parts are edible. Always ensure you are using the correct parts and consult reliable sources before attempting to cook with it.
