Carpinus betulus

Carpinus betulus

The story

In the mixed forests of Europe and Western Asia, the European hornbeam has long shared its territory. Growing alongside majestic oaks and beech trees, this species—historically referred to as the "yoke elm"—stands as one of only three hornbeam species native to Europe, carving out its place in the region's rich woodland history.

How to use it

The European hornbeam is ecologically valuable in its native habitats of Europe and Western Asia, where it naturally grows in scree forests and forms mixed stands alongside oak and beech trees.

Gardening tip

When planting hornbeam trees, make sure to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself. This helps the roots spread out and grow strong!

In the kitchen

Hornbeam is not typically eaten by humans. Its wood is more valued for its strength and durability, often used in furniture making and tool handles rather than in the kitchen.

About

Carpinus betulus, the European or common hornbeam, is a species of tree in the birch family Betulaceae, native to Western Asia and central, eastern, and southern Europe, including southern England. It requires a warm climate for good growth, and occurs only at elevations up to 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). It grows in mixed stands with oak, and in some areas beech, and is also a common tree in scree forests. Hornbeam was also known as yoke elm. Together with Carpinus orientalis and Carpinus austrobalcanica, it is one of the three hornbeams found in Europe.
