Wood ear

The story

This unusual fungus carries a dark piece of folklore in its name. The specific epithet, auricula-judae, is tied to the historical belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from an elder tree. Because the fungus resembles a human ear and grows predominantly on elder wood, it became known as the jelly ear or Judas's ear across many cultures.
